Jered Weaver shines as Los Angeles Angels defeat Cleveland Indians 2-1 – MLB Update
Jered Weaver put in a brilliant performance as the Los Angeles Angels beat Cleveland Indians 2-1 at Progressive Field in Cleveland on July 26 to come-back in the second outing of the three game series.
Weaver and Josh Tomlin started the game with their greatest impetus, as they both did not let the opposing batters to steal even a single run in the first six innings. However, having an edge of seven straight wins, Weaver was on the heights of his confidence.
Tomlin allowed the first run of the game in the top of the seventh inning to the Angels’ Mark Trumbo, who doubled to deep-right-centre to take a 2-0 lead. After getting support from the batters, Weaver allowed a one-run homer to Matt LaPorta in the bottom
of the seventh inning. His hit might have sent him into a losing stand but he showed great control to trounce Tomlin.
He made five strike-outs over 113 pitches of seven innings to grab his eighth straight and 14 overall win of the season. He is one win behind the New York Yankees’ Carsten Charles Sabathia, who is leading the chart with 15 wins.
"I don't know how it's happening," he said. "I'm just going out and doing my job. I get a lot of good defence behind me and timely hitting. I can't get overexcited and have to just go out the next time and try to give my team a chance to win."
Tomlin, on the other hand lost his second straight game and fifth overall of 21 starts in the 2011 MLB season. After losing this game, he has dropped to 11-5 with 4.01 ERA.
Angels’ Scott Downs did not allow any run in the eighth and Jordan Walden stopped the Indians from another last at-bat win. On Monday night, Walden worked one inning when the Indians scored two runs to get a 3-2 win. However, despite having two bases loaded,
Walden did not let Cleveland to gather any run.
"They stopped the magic tonight," Indians’ manager Manny Acta said after the Angels kept Cleveland from its second straight last at-bat win and 12th of the season at home.
Indians’ closer Rafael Perez did not allow any run over one inning.
The series is tied at 1-all and the next contest will be an exciting hard fought battle.
