Jered Weaver shines as Los Angeles Angels defeat Seattle Mariners 4-0 – MLB Update
Jered Weaver pitched a shut-out inning on Tuesday, June 14, to enable Los Angeles Angels to beat the Seattle Mariners 4-0 at Safeco Field, Seattle.
This was Weaver’s second shut-out of the season and his being the third pitcher on Tuesday, after Shields and Verlander, to pitch a shut-out game.
"Anytime you get punched in the gut early, you really have to regroup and he did," Seattle manager Eric Wedge said. "He gave his teammates a chance to come back. We didn't pick him up, d**n sure wish we would have."
Jered’s gloriously successful march on Tuesday began after the Angels capitalised upon the weakness of Doug Fister who gave up four runs in the very first inning. But in reality, Weaver seemed poised to make things difficult for the already straining Mariners’
offence.
"Weaver kind of had us all over the place tonight. ... That's what he does," Wedge said. "When you are dragged into his game like that, it's going to be a long night. That's what happened."
When Fister came to pitch, little did he expect or his team predict what the Angels’ offence had to offer. Torii Hunter was the first to open the account for the Angels with a single to left, allowing Aybar to score.
In an inning that saw five hits, Howard Kendrick was the score, doubling the Angels’ lead. Russell Branyan was next to single to right-centre to make it 3-0 for the team following Peter Bourjos who scored the fourth run for the Angels.
Once the first inning gave an ideal start to the Angels, it was Weaver who took the responsibility upon himself to defend the lead and guide the team towards victory. Having an impressive 3.07 ERA in June, Weaver remained unplayable.
Even though Fister was not relieved after what transpired to be a disastrous first inning with four runs in the fold, the Mariners’ offence seemed hardly able to play Weaver who unleashed his fastballs with ever more rapid pace.
Fister pitched well throughout other innings, but it was Weaver who dominated the game considering the fact that his team had already got an advantage of 4-0 lead. Weaver continued to dominate the game while Fister was relieved by Aaron Laffey in the eighth
inning.
Laffey pitched well, but circumstances did not favour his team. Weaver, going into the ninth inning, pitched another scoreless inning to complete his shut-out game to give the Angels a 4-0 lead against the struggling Mariners which had recently changed their
hitting coach, but perhaps to no avail.
