Jered Weaver spearheads Los Angeles Angels in 6-0 rout of Oakland Athletics - MLB Update
Starter Jered Weaver strikes-out nine as he helps the Los Angeles Angels comprehensively beat the Oakland Athletics 6-0 at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California during the last match of the four game series on September 13, 2012.
Both the teams were not at their best offensively throughout the game except for the seventh inning when the Angels posted six runs. This shows the quality of pitches that were thrown in the match by the hurlers.
Weaver did an incredible job for the Angels as he disallowed batters from striking many hits on Thursday. Athletics could manage only four hits in the match. That very much explains their inability to score even a single run in the game.
Angels needed this victory after they were defeated in the last game. As they hold third position on the table at the moment, they cannot afford other teams sending them out of contention by winning more games.
At such a crucial juncture of the season, losing streaks can be damaging to an extent of ruining the whole effort they put from day one.
Offensively, Angels relied on right fielder Torii Hunter and third baseman Alberto Callaspo.
Hunter struck three hits in four at-bats while he contributed two RBIs. Hunter praises the impeccable spell by Weaver as he talks about the home-run that he hammered. He was searching for the right pitches before he found the perfect one and slammed it for
some distance.
"Weave pitched a tremendous game, and he was just waiting for us to do something," Hunter said. "The home run came on a two-seam fastball away. I was kind of looking for a pitch out over the plate, but I was able to get extension and drive it. I wasn't thinking
about hitting a home run at all. I just wanted to hit it hard, get on base for the guys behind me and get something started."
Weaver completed seven scoreless innings for the Angels. He earned his 17th win of the season.
Angels have momentum on their side now. They will be trying to make the most of it and win as many matches as they can in the next couple of weeks.
It will be exciting to see how the Angels manage to carry their winning momentum forward in their next series.
