Jered Weaver’s nine inning pitches guide Los Angeles Angels over Oakland Athletics 5-0 – MLB Update
Los Angeles Angels’ starter Jered Weaver pitched right through the nine innings and struck-out 10 batters in the Angels’ 5-0 victory against the Oakland Athletics at Angel Stadium of Anaheim in California on April 25.
It was the six consecutive start of Weaver which resulted in the Angels’ success. With this convincing victory, the Angels broke their four-game losing streak. Weaver was economical in his pitching as he threw with an ERA of 0.99 and did not permit a run
on seven hits. He gave away just a single walk to one runner on reaching third base.
Weaver pitched his fourth complete game of his baseball career. He also got fame by improving the winning percentage for the Angels and attained his 70th win. Weaver broke the most wins record of Frank Tanana and Nolan Ryan. At the start of his
Major League career, he proved his place by having a Win-Loss record of 9-0 in 12 starts.
Despite Weaver’s performance, the Angels’ opener Bobby Abreu also shined as he struck an RBI double to take the lead during the third inning. With an infield single off Howie Kendrick, the Angels led off with 3-0. Kendrick completed his single on the fault
of Coco Crisp in the centre-field position. Crisp connected with the ball three times but it was not a powerful shot to complete a run.
It was the end of 24 continuous scoreless innings played by Kendrick in the previous games. In the fifth inning, the Angels extended their lead to 5-0 when Erick Aybar took the fifth run when Jeff Mathis hit a double-play grounder.
On the other side, it was not a memorable day for the Athletics as they were shut out in last three out of five games. The Athletics’ starter Gio Gonzalez pitched poorly as he allowed five runs on eight hits including four earned runs in five inning pitches.
He struck out five batters to lift the momentum of the Athletics, but it was too late.
The batters did not perform well for the Athletics as they were unable to score even a single run. The Athletics’ relievers David Purcey, Michael Wuertz and Jerry Blevins each threw scoreless innings, but this performance was not enough to clinch the win.
