Jered Weaver’s pitching helps Los Angeles Angels defeat Seattle Mariners 5-1 – MLB Update
The Los Angeles Angels’ ace Jered Weaver tossed an exceptional game to take his club to a 5-1 easy win over the Seattle Mariners in the four-game series-opener at Angel Stadium in Anaheim on Thursday, July 7.
Weaver struck-out six batters allowed only one run on six hits and walked one over his full nine innings game. In his 19th start of the season, Weaver tossed his fifth full game and each time he allowed one run or less. He has played three shut-out
full games and two one-run full games in his overall 11th win of the season.
He improved his record to 11-4 with exceptional 1.86 ERA and now is on the first position in the list of the top pitchers of the 2011. In this game, he allowed his only run in the top of the third inning on an RBI single to the Mariners’ short-stop Brendan
Ryan.
However, he received full back up from his batters, as just after he allowed a single the Angels’ bat awakened and blistered three runs in the bottom of the third inning. Bobby Abreu scored an RBI single to set off three-run third inning. Then Vernon Wells
hit a sacrifice for an RBI single followed by a single by Howard Kendrick for third run of the inning. With this hit, Kendrick improved his hitting streak to 16 games in this season.
After these runs, the Mariners’ starter Doug Fister struck back to remain scoreless in his later three innings. Overall, he tossed six innings, allowed three runs on seven hits, walked only one and made two strike-outs. Despite his perfect come-back, he
failed to save himself from his 10th loss that sent him to a poor 3-10 record with 3.09 ERA in 18 starts of the season.
As soon as he handed the ball to closer Chris Ray in the eighth inning, the Angels again blistered two runs to cement their 5-1 win. This cost Ray two runs on three hits over two innings.
Peter Bourjos and catcher Jeff Mathis each added an RBI single. After making a good hit, Bourjos left the game due to an apparent leg injury in the bottom of the eighth inning. In the end, the Angels took a comprehensive victory over the Mariners.
