Jeremy Affeldt’s possible deal may set contract price for Sean Burnett - MLB Update
Free agent relief pitcher, Sean Burnett can take heart from the reports that the San Francisco Giants are about to sign a three-year deal worth $18 million with Jeremy Affeldt. If the deal is confirmed, Burnett can have the price of his potential contract
with any of the interested organisations set.
Burnett played for the Washington Nationals during 2012 regular season. He was part of arguably one of the most accomplished bullpens in the National League. By the dint of his quality throws, he was able to help the Nationals throughout the last season.
His role late in the innings was extremely significant for Washington.
The kind of shows that he put up at the mound for the team, it is highly expected that he will be re-signed by the Nationals during the offseason.
To this affect, as soon as the season came to an end, the Nationals invoked their mutual option on him, which Burnett declined. He wanted to be valued higher than what he will have earned through the option.
He tested the free agency and made the Nationals pursue him from there by making the highest bid in the market.
Satisfied by the role of Burnett in the team, the Nationals aim to see him continue playing for the club. However, the fact there may be some other clubs interested in acquiring Burnett can make it difficult for Washington to retain him.
All depends on how much amount of money the Nationals are willing to spend on him.
If they can offer something like $18 million for three years similar to the possible contract of Affeldt with the Giants, there is a great possibility that Burnett stays with them.
By the time Giants declare officially their new pact with Affeldt, it will be far easier for the Nationals to determine the right price of Burnett. They will be in a better position to decide whether pursuing him is affordable for them or not.
Burnett will be hoping he gets the desired amount of money in the agreement.
It will be interesting to see Burnett becoming a part of the hype as the offseason progresses and signing a new contract.
