Jeremy Chardy bounces back to overcome Donald Young in the opening round – Rogers Cup 2012
France’s Jeremy Chardy fought back after losing the first set to defeat the world number 84, Donald Young of USA, 3-6, 7-6(4), 6-0 in the first round of Rogers Cup in Toronto, Canada on Monday. The Frenchman took two hours and
12 minutes to claim victory in a hard fought contest.
Young drew the first blood, as he broke his French rival in the second game to move ahead 2-0 but he lost following two games to square off the score at 2-2. They broke each other in the following two and took the score to 3-3.
Young dominated the proceedings afterwards, as he captured three games in a row to seal it 6-3.
The American player gave a mixed performance on serve, as he kept his first delivery percentage at 67 and bagged 21 of the 28 points on them. The 23-year-old faced problem on his second serves, losing 12 of the 14. On the other
hand, Chardy was self destructive, as he committed four double faults and dropped 10 of the 13 points on the first deliveries in the opener.
Start of second set was stable if compared to the first, as both players held their serve in the opening five games to take the score to 3-2 in favour of Chardy. The Frenchman snatched a break in the sixth to take a 4-2 lead but
Young did not take much time to strike back and level it at 4-4. Rest of the set went with serves, taking the score to 6-6 and forcing a tie-breaker. Chardy attained a 4-1 lead and made the most of it to win 7-6(4).
The French contestant drastically improved his serves in the second set, bombarding six aces on his opponent and committing just one double fault. The 6ft 2in tall maintained a first serve percentage of 77 and converted 23 of the
30 of them into points. Though, his performance on second serves remained below average, as he lost five of the nine points on them.
After winning the second set with the narrowest of margins, Chardy played flawlessly in the final set. The French participant did not allow Young to claim even a single game in the entire set, capturing it 6-0.
Chardy will lock horns with the third seed, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France, in the second round. Ranked sixth in the world, Tsonga received a bye in the opening round.
