Jeremy Chardy defeats Philipp Kohlschreiber in quarterfinal round – Kremlin Cup 2011
Firing up with the first quarterfinal match of the day, Friday, 21st October, of the Kremlin Cup 2011, Jeremy Chardy, French world No.133, blazed out higher ranked German, Philipp Kohlschreiber, world No.49, in an hour
and 25 minutes blue court match winning 6-4, 6-3.
Playing at the Olympic Stadium, Moscow, Russia, German world No.49 was stunned by the Frenchman’s brilliant performance as he finished off the match with 70 points, including 52 service points and 18 returners.
Starting off with the fixture, Chardy won the toss and served first rolling down the scoreboard, 1-0. Following up with a winner, Kohlschreiber levelled up, 1-1, and stood to return again. Despite the disparity in ranking, the
24-year-old was in a greater commanding position from the start.
With the two winning games on respective serves, the two levelled up at 2-2, 3-3 and on 4-4 before the lower ranked Frenchman struck. Serving out game 9, 5-4, Chardy wiped out game 10, breaking the German with a magnificent forehand
winner bagging the set, 6-4 and led the match, 1-0.
Leading the match, Chardy then stood to serve first again for set 2. Maintaining his strong first serve percentage, Chardy outplayed game 1 and led the match, 1-0; however, Kohlschreiber stormed away game 2, Equalizer, 1-1. The
28-year-old German pressurized his rival as he almost broke Chardy in game 3, 2-1.
With a 1 game lead, Chardy returned in game 4 and struck as he broke the higher ranked competitor and served out game 5 with a mesmerizing triple game point winner, pocketing 2 straight games and led the set, 4-1.
Cutting down the lead, 2-4, the higher ranked German put forward his best, yet could not break back or level up any further. With just two more games to win and finish off the set, match, Chardy served out two out of the next three
games crushing world No.49, 6-3, in set 2, to walk away winning the match in straight set.
Through into the semi-final round of the Kremlin Cup 2011, Chardy will now play either Viktor Troicki or Alex Bogomolov Jr.
