Jeremy Chardy downs Daniel Gimeno-Traver in final – Madrid Challenger 2011
Jeremy Chardy, French world No.101, battled passed Daniel Gimeno-Traver in the final showdown of the Madrid Challenger winning his first title of the season. Playing each other for the 6th time, the 24-year-old Frenchman
levelled up the head-to-head scores against the Spaniard beating him in the final 6-1, 5-7, 7-6(3) in a fierce 2 hour and 27 minutes clay 2011 Madrid Challenger finale.
Firing up with the first set, Chardy, Frenchman, rolled down the scoreboard first and took the lead, 1-0. Following up with the win, the Spaniard levelled up the scores, 1-1, and switched the serve. Serving out game 3, the world
No.24 went on breaking the world No.82 and led the set, 3-1.
With the Frenchman on the go, Chardy then served out game 5 and broke the 6th game extending his lead to 5-1 and left with one game to win the first set. Finally, serving out game 7, the 24-year-old pocketed the set
winning 6-1 and went on to play the second set.
Continuing with set 2, Gimeno-Traver, former world No.52, opened up the scorecard saving a breakpoint and stood to return next. Levelling up, Chardy won blistered the 2nd game and switched the serve.
Winning games on respective serves, the two levelled up at next at 2-2, 3-3, 4-4 and at 5-5, however, surprisingly, not in a tiebreaker. Serving out game 11, Gimeno-Traver broke the Frenchman in game 12 winning the set 7-5 and
levelled up the match scores, 1-1.
With the final set on its way, Gimeno-Traver served out the first game of the decider, 1-0, Chardy equalled up the scores right away and toggled the serve. As the two stormed each other with lighting forehands, Gimeno-Traver bombarded
his rival with a serve-n-break technique and commanded the set, 4-2.
Serving out next, the Spaniard extended his lead to 5-2 before the Frenchman struck back. Chardy made a comeback as he serve-broke-served the Spaniard and levelled the scores at 5-5. Flaring up the set, the two ended up in a tiebreak
set with Gimeno-Traver to serve first.
Winning 5 points straight, the 24-year-old Frenchman mesmerized his counterpart with an eventual winner, 7-3, and bagged the set 7-6(3) to win the match 2-1.
Jumping off with joy, the Frenchman grabbed the first title of the season. Prior to this win, he did make it to the final of the Nottingham Challenger but failed as he was lost the Israeli world No.102, Dudi Sela.
