French challenger, Jeremy Chardy, tumbled the local qualifier, Julian Reister, in straight sets at the Mercedes Cup 2012 on Tuesday. He jolted down a 6-2, 6-4 victory against the world number 538 to secure a place in the second round at this ATP (Association
of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 250 series event taking place in Germany.
Chardy fired six aces to pull out the victory in one hour and 18 minutes against the 26-year-old at this clay court tournament. Battling each other for the first time, the French convincingly progressed into the round of 16 and took lead in the FedEx ATP
Head 2 Head series by 1-0 against the Hamburg native.
The 25-year-old thundered into the Tennis Club Weissenhof and drew the first blood in the opening game to take the initial lead. He maintained his intensity and capitalised another break chance in the fifth game to leap to a 5-1 lead. Chardy held his serve
once more and clicked the opener with a 6-2 win.
Ranked 51st in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Chardy kept his rhythm in the follow-up set and held his opening serve to level the scores at 1-1. He continued hitting angled shots and plucked his entire serves without encountering
any breakpoint. The French got the breakthrough in the ninth game and pulled out the victory with a 6-4 score line.
All in all, the French clobbered an equal first serve share of 59 per cent but impressively availed 29 out of 35 points on it. He sought nine break chances and finished the match with 68 points.
Chardy will next confront the local contestant, Cedrik-Marcel Stebe, who is looking forward to improve his game for this match-up.
“I just have to focus on my game. I just have to be calm, don’t be nervous and it should work out fine,” the beaming German stated in a courtside interview after winning his opening round match against the seventh seed, Lukasz Kubot.
The German underdog was broken three times but cashed in half of the eight break chances to formulate a 6-2, 0-6, 6-3 score line in one hour and 41 minutes.
