Jeremy Chardy downs Matthew Ebden to reach third round – US Open 2012
Seeded 32nd in this major hard court event, Jeremy Chardy tumbled the Australian contender, Matthew Ebden, in straight sets at the Flushing Meadows 2012 on Thursday. He juggled up a 6-4, 6-2, 6-2 success against the 24-year-old to power into the
round of 32 at this major hard court event held in Corona Park, New York City.
The seeded French displayed brilliant tennis to outrun Ebden in straight sets in their first meeting. After penning down the victory in one hour and 52 minutes, Chardy took lead in the head-to-head series by 1-0 against the Aussie and progressed into the
third round at this last of the four Grand Slam event taking place from 27th August to 9th September.
Chardy convincingly entered the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. He fired angled shots to keep his entire serves and clicked the opener after capitalising on one out of four break chances in the ninth game. He brushed off the lone breakpoint
he faced and eventually sealed the opener with a 6-4 score line.
Ranked 32nd in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Chardy kept momentum rolling in the following set. He got the coveted break in the third game and jumped to a 3-1 lead. After Ebden held his serve in the fifth game, the French
wiped out the last three games consecutively and clicked the set with a 6-2 win.
The 25-year-old went berserk in the final set. He unveiled his true form and reeled off the opening four games before Ebden could hold on. The French held his remaining serves with conviction and sealed the set by winning six games to two.
Summing up the French’s performance in this encounter, Chardy smashed nine vicious aces to prevail. He clobbered a better first serve share of 59 per cent as opposed to his rival’s 54 per cent and amazingly marked 37 out of 46 points on it.
Up next for Chardy is the Slovakian contender, Martin Klizan, who recorded his biggest win to reach this spot. The Slovak stunned fifth seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, in a four-set thriller to progress.
