Jeremy Chardy knocks out Albert Montanes in the opening round – German Tennis Championships 2012
World number 52, Jeremy Chardy of France, beat the 86th ranked Spaniard, Albert Montanes, in straight sets in the first round of the Bet-at-home German Tennis Championships in Hamburg.
Chardy lost just six games in the entire encounter, winning it 6-4, 6-2 in just an hour and eight minutes on Monday.
The Frenchman and his Spanish rival started the match by winning their opening serves and levelling the proceedings at 1-1. Chardy struck in the third game and consolidated on it to go up 3-1. The French contestant sustained his
advantage throughout, sealing it 6-4.
Three aces were pounded by Chardy compared to only one by Montanes, with both players committing one double fault in the first set. The Frenchman was also ahead of his opponent in the serve percentage and conversion rate, as he
banged in 72 percent of the first deliveries and converted 14 of the 18 of them into points. The Liege, Belgium resident was near flawless on the second ones, as he lost only one point on them. Chardy did not come across any break threat and utilised three
of the four he opportunities he created.
In opposition to first set, Chardy and Montanes started the second by breaking each other in the opening two games, equalising the score at 1-1. The Frenchman struck again in the third and fifth, holding his own serves this time
to race to a 5-1 advantage. Montanes was flawless in the seventh game, as he won it without losing any point but he could not stage a comeback, going down 2-6.
Chardy delivered an ace and hit a couple of double faults, maintaining a first serve percentage of 59 and securing nine of the 13 points on them. The best part of the French player’s game was his replies to his opponent’s deliveries,
claiming three of the five first and nine of the 14 second return points in the second set. Chardy was unable to save the only break point he faced but succeeded in converting three of the five he received.
The French contender will meet the winner of encounter between Julian Reister and Fernando Verdasco in the round of 16.
