Jeremy Chardy ousts Federico Delbonis in the opening round – Grand Prix Hassan II 2012
French contender, Jeremy Chardy, tumbled over the Argentinean qualifier, Federico Delbonis, in straight sets at the Grand Prix Hassan II 2012, an ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 250 series event held in Casablanca, Morocco. He nudged
up a 6-4, 7-5 success against the 21-year-old to progress in the second round on Tuesday.
The world number 64 dominated throughout the match to trash Delbonis in 100 minutes at this clay court event. As a result, Chardy convincingly took lead in the head-to-head series by 1-0 against the left-handed Argentinean and charged into the round of 16.
Chardy enthusiastically entered the Complexe Al Amal and held his serve in the second game to level the scores at 1-1. He then hammered angled shots down the line and with a single break of serve, the French pulled out the opener with a 6-4 score line.
The 25-year-old kept momentum sailing into the proceeding set and after earning the desiderated break in the third game, he leaped to a 3-1 lead. In spite of squandering his serve in the sixth game, Chardy remained calm and cashed in his second break opportunity
in the eleventh game to put his nose ahead once again. The French then slid his serve once more and sealed the set by winning seven games to five.
Summing up the French’s performance in this duel, Chardy jolted down a lower first serve share of 53 per cent as opposed to the Argentinean’s 62 per cent. However, he brilliantly availed 29 out of 42 points on it. The French also showed exceptional defensive
skills after warding off eight out of nine breakpoints he encountered and converted three out of four break opportunities to his advantage.
Up next for Chardy is the top seed, Florian Mayer, who received a bye into the second round after being the top four player of the tournament.
Matthias Bachinger of Germany will accompany the French in the round of 16. He rallied past the Italian challenger, Filippo Volandri, in a see-saw three setter to advance at this tournament. The 25-year-old blocked seven out of 10 breakpoints he faced and
broke his rival’s serve four times to register a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 victory.
