Jeremy Chardy overcomes Michael Lammer to reach quarterfinal – Madrid Challenger 2011
French tennis pro Jeremy Chardy defeated Swiss Michael Lammer 6-2, 7-6(3), 6-4 on Wednesday to advance into the quarterfinal of 2011 Madrid Challengerhere in Madrid, Spain.
Entering the tournament as a lucky loser, Lammer looked in great form in his opening match of the tournament. However, he failed to continue his impressive run on the red clay courts of Madrid as he wasted large number of opportunities
in his pre-quarterfinal match up against Frenchman Jeremy Chardy.
Unable to convert single break point out of twelve that he had during the match, Lammer really did not help himself. He was given enough chances by his opponent but he failed to handle the pressure as he leaked crucial points.
Ranked 354th in the world, will be hoping to come back stronger on his next Association of Tennis Professionals appearance.
Chardy played a controlled match. Although he was largely assisted by his opponent unforced errors, the quality of his game play was quite good in general. Hitting thirteen serves aces in the match, he served with control and accuracy.
Converting three out of five break points in the match, he made the most of available opportunities. Saving all twelve break points against himself, his defence was also as good as his attacking abilities.
Playing extremely from deep behind the baseline, he was able to get to some of the difficult balls. Placing his forehand and backhand winners all over the court, he had a great presence of mind. World number 115, Chardy will be
looking to maintain his current level of play in the upcoming matches as well to lift firs trophy of this season.
Converting 78 per cent of the points on his first serves, Chardy was able to get control of the points right from the start. Claiming 38 per cent of the points at the receiving end, he returned the serves brilliantly. Lammer, on
the other hand, was unable to control his unforced errors at crucial stages of the match. He certainly had his chances but he was unable to turn them to his advantage due to lack of concentration.
Chardy broke the serve twice in the opening set and he looked set for an easy victory until Lammer held on to six service games to force the second into a tie-breaker. Clinching the tie-breaker 7-3, he shifted the balance of the
match towards his side. However, in decider, Chardy regrouped himself to shatter his opponent’s dreams.
