Jeremy Chardy sails past Mischa Zverev into main draw – Kremlin Cup 2011
Qualifying third seeded Frenchman, Jeremy Chardy sailed into the main draw of the 2011 Kremlin Cup on Monday, 17th October in Moscow, Russia after enjoying a simple straight sets win over lower ranked German, Mischa
Zverev. The 133rd ranked Frenchman enjoyed a 7-5, 6-3 win over Zverev in only seventy five minutes.
Coming into the match, Chardy enjoyed a one match win over the German. The pair had earlier met in the quarterfinal round of the Mercedes Cup in 2009. Even then the Frenchman had enjoyed a straight, though perhaps not a simple,
sets victory over the German.
Hoping for a 2-0 lead over the German, Chardy successfully opened serve in the first set as he made it onto the scoreboard. Breaking his opponent in the second game, the Frenchman was able to secure an early, impassable 3-0 lead
in the set. From there on the score progressed on the pair’s respective serves, though the Frenchman maintained his two game lead. A lucky break came the German’s way in the ninth game as he broke his opponent to reduce the deficit to 4-5 before bringing the
set to even terms.
However, Zverev’s burst of energy was short-lived as Chardy held serve in the eleventh game before breaking the German in the twelfth to clinch a 7-5 win. Leading the set score 1-0, Chardy was all set to roll past the German into
the main draw of the event.
Repeating the feat in the second set, Chardy secured another early break as he broke his opponent in the second game to go 3-0 in the set. Riding this single breakpoint opportunity, Chardy was able to comfortably serve out the
set as he secured a 6-3 win, sealing his straight sets win.
In the seventy five minutes on the court, Chardy hit six aces, three times his opponent, and one double fault, one third his opponent’s, with an impressive 75 percent win on first serve. Saving five of six breakpoint opportunities
and winning a total of 70 of 125 points on service, Chardy was able to move into the main draw of the event where he will face Italian Potito Starace.
Moving ahead into the main draw with Chardy was the qualifying sixth seeded local, Konstantin Kravchuk. The sixth seed bounced back from a set down to do away with unseeded compatriot, Mikhail Ledovskikh in three sets.
In a battle that lasted two hours, Kravchuk secured a 6-7(4), 6-1, 7-5 win over his compatriot to move into the main draw of the Kremlin Cup. The Russian now looks to play seventh seeded Luxembourger, Gilles Muller in the opening
round.
