Jeremy Chardy stuns Florian Mayer to reach quarters – Grand Prix Hassan II 2012
French rising star, Jeremy Chardy, shocked the top seed, Florian Mayer, with a breadstick at the Grand Prix Hassan II 2012 on Thursday. He jolted down a 6-3, 6-1 victory against the 28-year-old to secure a place in the last eight at this ATP (Association
of Tennis Professionals) clay court event held in Casablanca, Morocco.
Chardy displayed his top notch performance at this ATP World Tour 250 series event and upset the highest ranked player of the tournament in straight sets. The contestants previously battled each other at the Cincinnati Masters 1000 event two years ago and
after earning this win, he improved to a 2-0 lead in the FedEx ATP Head 2 Head series against the German.
"I feel very well," said Chardy. "I came back from 1-3 behind in the first set. I was playing very aggressively during every point until the end. I hope I can continue like this in my next match. I often played in Morocco and I made some good results here."
The 25-year-old made a nervy start at the Complexe Al Amal and suffered the first blow in the third game to fall at 1-3. However, he made a fitting reply and reeled off the following five games successively, ultimately sealing the opener by winning six games
to three.
Ranked 64th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Chardy kept momentum rolling into the follow-up set and earned the coveted break in the opening game to take the initial lead. Despite losing his serve in the very next game, the
German blasted massive groundstrokes to wipe out the following five-games successively. He capitalised on four out of six break chances to earn the glory.
Summing up the top seed’s performance, Mayer displayed dismal performance throughout his opening round match. He cashed in his both break chances but was underplayed by the French after saving only five out of 11 breakpoints he came across.
Next in queue for the underdog is the seventh seed, Albert Ramos, who tumbled over Romania’s Victor Hanescu in straight sets in 82 minutes to set-up this clash.
