Jeremy Chardy upsets Andy Murray in the third round of the Cincinnati Masters – Tennis News
Third seed, Andy Murray, received an upset at the hands of the French underdog, Jeremy Chardy, in straight sets of 6-4, 6-4 in the third round of the Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati on Thursday.
The disposal of the new Olympic champion is surely shocking for the British fans, as Cincinnati is the last Masters Series tournament before the US Open and Murray had defended his title this year, then he would have surely
secured the world number three spot by dismantling the Spaniard number one, Rafael Nadal.
Murray told the media in a post match interview, “Going into the big tournaments, sometimes I've won tournaments in the build-up and it hasn't helped me. I had break points in the first set. If I had maybe gone up there,
maybe I would have started to play better. But when I went behind, he started serving better and he was going for his shots.”
Ranked 38th in the ATP World Tour rankings, Chardy is surprised at his drastic improvement. He managed to upset American tennis ace, Andy Roddick in the opening round of the tournament earlier this
week. If luck favoured him, he can end the tournament in an emphatic fashion, resultantly eyeing for a seed at the hard courts of the Flushing Meadow.
He told the media, “Now I feel very good on court, and I play very relaxed. It's good when I feel like this on the court."
The British number one never started the match with his usual solid performance. He bombarded his rival with 10 aces and double faulted once in the second set. Nevertheless, Chardy pulled off four aces and double faulted
three times but he managed a decent serve rate of 57 percent.
Murray was never successful in attaining the lead in the scores, despite of his aggressive game play. He struggled hard to level the points in the middle of the set but the French professional nailed his serve in the both
the sets. The young Brit could not consolidate it and seemed helpless on Chardy’s serve.
The Frenchman was able to pocket 29 of 41 first serve and 14 of 31 second deliveries. The 25-year-old managed to convert 23 of 36 points and 14 of 30 second serves respectively.
Chardy will be competing with the former US Open champion, Juan Martin Del Potro, in the quarterfinals of the tournament.
