Jeremy Chardy’s dream run is over in Cincinnati – Tennis News
French player, Jeremy Chardy, could not reach the first semi-final of his career at an ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event, as he lost at the last-eight stage.
Chardy was beaten by the sixth seed, Juan Martin Del Potro of Argentina, in a one-sided contest on Friday. The Frenchman managed to win just four games in the entire match losing it in straight sets 1-6, 3-6 in just an hour and
16 minutes.
The 25-year-old played brilliant in this tournament to reach the quarter-finals but his luck also favoured him. Chardy rose to the 38th spot in ATP Rankings this week, after his solid performance at Rogers Cup in Toronto
seven days back.
However, rankings were locked for Western and Southern Open before Chardy’s heroics in Toronto, which is why he failed to enter the main draw directly. The Frenchman entered the qualifying draw, where he was the top seed.
Chardy defeated Robby Ginepri in straight sets 6-4, 6-4 in the first qualifier but he was stunned by the eight seed, Fabio Fognini, 6-3, 1-6, 6-7(5) in the final round.
Though, the French player’s luck favoured him and USA’s number one player, John Isner, announced his withdrawal from the event at the 11th hour. Because of that, Chardy was able to enter the main draw as a luck loser.
The French contender was pitted against former world number one, Andy Roddick, in the very first round. He played bravely against the 16th seed and defeated him in straight sets 7-6(4), 6-3. In his second match, Chardy
upset the world number 33, Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan, 6-4, 6-3. After that, the Frenchman clinched the biggest win of his career, stunning the London Olympics Gold Medallist, Andy Murray, in straight sets 6-4, 6-4 in the round of 16.
Chardy, who had jumped nine place in the world rankings due to his last week’s superb performance in Toronto, will move further up on the ladder now.
This was the Frenchman’s second top 10 win in as many weeks, as he had surprised the sixth ranked player, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, in straight sets 6-4, 7-6(4) in the second round at the Rogers Cup.
Chardy, who attained his highest ranking of 31st in the world back in 2009, reached the semi-finals on only one occasion this year. He was beaten by the then world number 29, Juan Monaco of Argentina, in straight sets
1-6, 4-6 at the last-four stage of VTR Open in February.
