Jeremy Flores enjoys success in Round 1 heat at Volcom Fiji Pro – Surfing News
France’s Jeremy Flores secured his place in the third round of Volcom Fiji Pro, the fourth of ten stops on the 2012 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Championship Tour, after putting on an impressive performance to claim victory in the 11th
heat of Round 1 that went down at the primary event site of Cloudbreak in Tavarua, Fiji, on Sunday, June 3.
Travis Logie from South Africa had to settle for a second-place finish, whereas Brazil’s Gabriel Medina rounded out the third place. Both Logie and Medina consequently found themselves getting relegated to the second round, having to surf another heat to
earn their place in the third round.
There was plenty of action in store for the surfing fans on the opening day of the latest elite tour event, with promising surfing conditions on hand. The six-to-eight foot waves gracing the open ocean reef pass appeared to be a perfect stage to host a series
of thrilling battles between the top surfing talents from around the world, with every surfer equally determined to get their hands on a good result in order to become a strong contender for the coveted ASP World Championship Title.
The 11th heat of Round 1 pitted Flores against Logie and Medina in a three-man battle for a direct spot in Round 3 without having to go through the second round.
As the battle got underway, none of the three surfers looked very comfortable with the waves, primarily due to a sudden loss in generosity of the sea. Flores eventually managed to break free of the shackles by getting into a perfect position to catch a juicy
left-hander. Going all-out on the potent scoring opportunity that had appeared, the Frenchman managed to post a near-perfect 9.87 on the score-board. He continued the momentum to add another 3.93 points to his account, thus finishing with a heat-total of 13.80
points. The score received absolutely no challenge from the other two surfers in the heat, thus allowing Flores to walk away with a comprehensive victory.
Logie collected a couple of scores in the three-point range to finish with a heat-total of 7.50 points, while Medina only managed to get to a heat-total of 6.00 points, which comprised of a 3.33 and 2.67-point ride. Both the surfers still remained in the
competition field, though they faced a do-or-die situation in their next heat.
