Jeremy Gan not pleased with umpiring standards of Australian Open finals – Badminton News
The Mixed Doubles coach of Malaysia Jeremy Gan lashed out against the umpiring standards in Australian Open finals and said that his Mixed Doubles duo Chan Peng Soong-Liu Ying lost due to some bad judgments.
World Number eight couple Peng Soon-Liu Ying went down against the Taipei duo Chen Hung Ling-Cheng Wen Hsing in the title match of Australian Open after putting up a great 63-minute fight.
Malaysians had a great run throughout the event and they were hot favourite for the trophy but their rivals proved tough nut to crack as they sealed the victory with tight yet decisive figures of 22-20, 12-21 and 23-21.
Mixed Doubles experts Peng Soon and Liu Ying were in commanding position with 8-5 score in the decider but three line calls against them changed the story.
The coach Jeremy Gan showed his anger at the umpiring standards and believes bad judgments worked in Taiwanese favour.
He said, “Peng Soon-Liu Ying were leading 8-5 when a shot was called in although it was out. The players’ protest fell on deaf ears. The Taiwanese then turned the match around by taking a 9-8 lead.”
In opening game of the match, the Malaysian couple established a decent lead in last moments with 18-15 score but they frittered away this golden opportunity and lost the first game.
The badminton guru Jeremy Gan thinks that the duo squandered a golden chance otherwise the things would have been different. He believes this loss will be a lesson for the Mixed Doubles experts Peng Soon and Liu Ying in the 2012 London Olympics.
Jeremy said, “After taking an 18-16 lead, they should have gone for the kill but took their time instead and that backfired. This should be a lesson so that they don’t make the same mistake at the Olympics.”
World Number eight couple Peng Soon-Liu Ying is expected to jump on seventh position after their staggering performance in first quarter of this season.
Their next challenges will be the Asian Badminton Championships and the India Open Super Series this month and both shuttlers will try to elevate their rankings before the Olympic qualification period ends in May.
