Jeremy Guthrie helps Kansas City Royals edge Chicago White Sox 2-1 – MLB Update
Starting pitcher Jeremy Guthrie threw brilliantly into the eighth inning as Kansas City Royals edged the Chicago White Sox 2-1 at U.S. Cellular Field in Chicago, Illinois on Wednesday, August 8 in the finale of their three match series.
"That arguably could be the best-pitched game we had all year," Royals manager Ned Yost said. "He was in total control ... locating his pitches down, changing speeds, great command of the strike zone (and) never really got into any spots where they really
threatened."
Despite losing two of three against Kansas City, the White Sox are occupying the first place on American League Central Division standings table. With a series sweep at U.S. Cellular Field, they could have consolidated their position at the top of league
standings but that did not turn out to be the case.
Ned Yost and company showed great character and composure to prevail 5-2 in Game 2. Similar pattern of play was observed in the finale as Royals outplayed their opponents in finer details of the game.
Guthrie, in particular, produced a magical performance to lay the foundations of an impressive Royals’ victory. It was his first win after May 1 and it will not be wrong to say that the right hander played a critical role in deciding the outcome of the game.
Striking-out six batters and allowing just five hits in eight masterful innings, Guthrie created all sort of problems for Chicago’s hitters.
His counterpart Jose Quintana took his second loss of the season after giving up five hits and two runs in seven innings.
"You want to win, but you can't make it happen no matter how much you worry about it," Guthrie said. "All you can do is just try to make better pitches and limit your runs. You give up zero runs you've got a better chance to win than if you give up six.”
Mike Moustakas homered to right in the second inning to put Royals on the board. Sean Perez added a solo home-run to right in the fourth to double the lead to 2-0. Relief pitcher Greg Holland did not show any signs of nerves in the ninth to grab his third
save of the year.
