Jeremy Guthrie shines as Baltimore Orioles defeat Toronto Blue Jays 2-0 – MLB Update
Jeremy Guthrie’s night was special and the energy that glowed around the pitcher could not have been offset by any other star as the Baltimore Orioles beat Toronto Blue Jays 2-0 on Friday, September 9 at Rogers Centre, Toronto.
Guthrie, who pitched for the Orioles, faced off against Brett Cecil of the Blue Jays. The veteran ball thrower went into the encounter 6-17, but one thing was different. The pitcher had a milestone waiting to be crossed. Playing in his 1,000th
inning as a start-up pitcher was the achievement that waited for the Orioles’ star.
He reached his destination in style as he pitched seven innings in the game, reaching the milestone on the second out of the sixth inning. He did not conceded any runs during the game and managed to allow just three hits and three walks.
Cecil did an excellent job as well. He threw 7.2 innings, conceding a run later in his stint on the mound. The star picked up seven hits but he struck-out nine in the process. Toronto manager John Farrell was full of praise for Cecil.
"Very encouraging," Farrell said of Cecil's display. "Not just from my vantage point, but certainly Brett's. He had swing-and-a-miss type stuff tonight. That's the guy that we've seen from time-to-time, and tonight was a very strong performance on his part.
He just happened to be pitching on the wrong day."
Toronto second baseman, Kelly Johnson, created the first scoring opportunity for the Orioles as the infielder committed a throwing error, leading J. J. Hardy to the second baseman.
It was Vladimir Guerrero who then led a RBI single against Cecil as the former Texas designated hitter slammed a single on a line drive towards left-field. Hardy scored and that gave the away team a much needed lead.
"I'm scared to even intentionally walk him," Cecil said. "He might stick the bat out there and try and flip one. He's a tough hitter when guys are on base."
Cecil did not earn the first run but he did receive the second one as Ryan Adams managed to get to third base without trouble in the eighth inning. He eventually scored the second run when Nick Markakis grounded out to Kelly, leaving room for a scoring run.
The Blue Jays were not able to respond in kind as Guthrie kept his form up and the relievers followed in good swing. Jim Johnson picked up a save for the Orioles, at the end. It will be interesting to see how Orioles carry their winning momentum forward
into their next match-up.
