Jeremy Guthrie sparks as Baltimore Orioles beat Minnesota Twins 6-1 - MLB Update
Baltimore Orioles’ starter, Jeremy Guthrie had a tremendous day with his pitching as he surrendered just one run and five hits with an ERA of 4.42 in the Orioles’ 6-1 victory against the Minnesota Twins at Target Field, Minnesota on August 24.
The batters got out without giving any initial advantage to their teams in the first two innings. Orioles looked powerless as at third base J.J. Hardy fouled out, at left-field Nick Markakis flied out and Adam Jones struck-out swinging. Similarly, Twins
were also score-less at the bottom of first inning as Justin Morneau walked but at right-field Jason Kubel flied out and at second base Jim Thome grounded out without taking runs.
At the bottom of second inning, Danny Valencia and Luke Hughes both struck-out swinging while Drew Butera flied out to left-field. Twins took their first run during third inning and got a 1-0 lead. Kubel added the first run for Twins when Morneau hit a double-run
drive towards deep right-field.
The pitchers rose above the batters during fourth inning by pitching perfectly. Guthrie struck-out five batters in his seven inning pitches and allowed two walks with one earned run on his 107 pitches. Fifth inning went completely in favour of Orioles as
their batters smashed five runs to take a 5-1 lead.
Speaking to reporters, Guthrie said, “Once you're on the mound you realize the task at hand and you try to focus on that. I wouldn't say so much it was a distraction from pitch to pitch as much as just kind of heaviness from inside during the game.”
Mark Reynolds hit a solo homer (391 feet) towards left-field to tie the game. Jake Fox posted a tie-breaking run when Nolan Reimold hit a triple-run shot to deep centre-field. The third run was taken by Reimold when Ryan Adams doubled to deep right-centre.
Adams and Hardy both added the fourth and fifth run for Orioles when Matt Wieters drove a double-run shot to deep left-field.
Sixth, seventh and eighth inning went in pitcher’s way as they did not give away runs to any batter. In the ninth inning, Hardy posted a single run on the wild pitch of Glen Perkins to give the Orioles a convincing 6-1 lead.
However, Orioles moved towards clean sweep as they led off the four-game series 3-0 at Minnesota.
