Jeremy Hellickson’s pitching helps Tampa Bay Rays defeat New York Yankees 5-3 - MLB Update
Tampa Bay Rays’ starting pitcher, Jeremy Hellickson had an outstanding day with the ball as he threw six innings with an ERA of 2.95 and had one strike-out in the Rays’ 5-3 win against the New York Yankees at Tropicana Field, Florida on September 27.
In the first inning, Eduardo Nunez and Curtis Granderson both flied out towards centre-field while Robinson Cano ground out without adding any run for the Yankees. Similarly, B.J. Upton walked and picked off first base but Matt Joyce popped out to third
base and Desmond Jennings struck-out. Evan Longoria was saved to reach first base on the throwing error of Yankees’ Nunez.
Rays opened their scoring account in the second inning by taking two runs and got a 2-0 lead. Ben Zobrist struck a two-run homer towards right-field and Johnny Damon scored a single run. Yankees got off the mark during the third inning and reduced their
lead 2-1 when Russell Martin struck a one-run homer towards left-centre.
During the fourth, Nick Swisher and Martin both flied out while Jorge Posada ground out without contributing any run. Similarly, Reid Brignac singled off right-field but Kelly Shoppach struck-out and Sean Rodriguez fouled out to first base. Later on, Brignac
got out at second base when Jennings hit a grounder into fielder’s choice to short-stop position.
In the fifth inning, Brett Gardner scored a single run for the Yankees to tie the game 2-2 when Granderson hit a grounder into double play, short-stop to first base. Nunez got out at second base at the top of the fifth. Yankees went ahead 3-2 during the
sixth inning when Alex Rodriguez posted a single run on the double-run drive of Swisher towards deep centre-field. Mark Teixeira occupied third base at the top of the sixth.
Hellickson gave away three runs, five walks, one homer, three earned runs and six hits on his 89 pitches. Rays’ manager, Joe Maddon said, “What I was hoping for was maybe a double play and giving up one run. But my God, how do you even envision a triple
play.”
Rays took a 5-3 lead by scoring three quick runs at the bottom of seventh inning. Joyce struck a three-run homer towards right-field while Upton and Longoria both contributed two runs jointly to keep the Rays alive.
As a result, Rays led off the three-game series 2-0 after beating the Yankees convincingly.
