Jeremy Hellickson’s shutout innings helps Tampa Bay Rays beat Baltimore Orioles 3-0: MLB Update
The Tampa Bay Rays’ starter, Jeremy Hellickson had an impressive day with the ball, as the pitcher tossed nine shutout innings in the Club’s 3-0 rout over the Baltimore Orioles on Friday, May 13. With this win, Tampa Bay have taken a 1-0 lead in the three-game
series, taking place at the Tropicana Field.
Hellickson's pitching quality was so extraordinary that he not only stunned his own manager, but the Orioles’ manager, Buck Showalter, was also impressed to see him delivering his fast curved balls.
Showalter said while speaking to reporters after the game, "Hellickson, obviously, was in command. It never really felt like you had him lined up. Didn't have many good at-bats off of him."
The Rays manager, Joe Maddon expressed his full confidence over his top pitcher and said, "Once you've done it, you know you can do it in the future. He was always under control emotionally."
Hellickson earned his fourth win out of six starts this season, in which he allowed just four hits and one walk, making three strikeouts. The win has improved his record to 4-2 with a 2.98 ERA.
"I felt just as good in the ninth as I did in the first," Hellickson said. "I had a few complete games in high school, but this is the one that counts. This is much better."
Meanwhile, the Orioles starter Jeremy Guthrie wasn't too bad with his pitches as well. The player struck out five batters over eight innings, however, he gave away three runs on seven hits and allowed two walks, to bear his sixth loss of the season.
Guthrie has lost two of his last three games played against the Rays, including an 8-2 rout to Hellickson and the Rays last Saturday.
All three runs from the Rays came off Homers. Matt Joyce launched the first homer for a run in the second inning. He had 2 hits and 23-for-48, with 5 home runs and 13 RBIs in his last fourteen games.
Johnny Damon hammered the second two-run homer in the eighth inning to cement the Rays' twenty-third win in the season. This 2,606th hit also helped Damon break a tie for 73rd place on the all-time hit list with Tim Raines and Rabbit Maranville.
