Jeremy Powers wins the Trek USGP Cyclocross Planet Bike
After a quite season, Jeremy Powers finally break the silence and registered his first win of the season at the Trek USGP of Cyclocross Planet Bike Cup 2012.
He won the event with an impressive time of 1 hour, 3 minutes and 2 seconds overcoming Timothy Johnson of Team Cannondale p/b and Cyclocrossworld and Lukas Fluckiger of Team Trek World Racing.
Johnson fell ten seconds short at the second position while Lukas Fluckiger fell further 14 seconds behind at the third position during the contest.
Christopher Jones of Team Rapha-Focus and Ben Berden of Team Raleigh-Clement achieved the fourth and the fifth positions in the respective order.
After having a tremendous past season, the 29-year-old struggled in the current season and had to wait until late September to register his first victory.
Powers’ biggest goal of the 2012 season is the World Cup races in Europe where he intends to finish amongst top five.
"This is very important towards Louisville and getting those points to be on the front row," said Powers.
"Madison has always been a really good place for me. My first national title was here a couple of months ago. Doing this again here, at the opening GP, I'm definitely excited".
Second place finisher, Johnson was content with his position and thanked his team for their support during the race, “They are a competitor, they are new to the sport, but they are coming in at a such a great time," said Johnson after the race.
"Being able to support Katie [Compton] and bring the series back to life is very key, and that goes across any kind of sponsor obligations or wants".
Powers is now leading the Elite Men overall standings after the first round with as many as 50 points to his credit.
Timothy Johnson of Team Cannondale p/b Cyclocrossworld, Lukas Fluckiger, Christopher Jones and Ben Berden holds the next four positions with 40, 34, 30 and 26 points respectively.
Evan McNeely of Team Specialized Canada leads the under 23 men overall standings with Yannick Eckmann, Cody Kaiser, Tobin Ortenblad and Jeffrey Bahnson securing the second, third, fourth and the fifth positions respectively.
