Jeremy Stravius clinches Men’s 100m back-stroke semi-final: Day two – 2011 FINA World Championships
Jeremy Stravius captured the top qualification spot in the final of Men’s 100m back-stroke event by dominating the semi-final of the same meet on day two of the Federation Internationale de Natation (FINA) organised World Championships in Shanghai, China,
on Monday, July 25.
Stravius of France occupied the fastest qualification spot of the event in scintillating fashion, as he posted a stupendous time of 52.76 seconds to reach the final as the top contender for the gold medal.
His time was just 0.72 seconds behind American swimmer, Aaron Peirsol’s world mark of 51.94 seconds, made during July in 2009. He missed the championship record of 52.19 seconds, set by Peirsol in August 2009, with a difference of only 0.57 seconds.
The French swimmer was followed by Ryosuke Irie of Japan, who remained only 0.29 seconds behind his preceding swimmer and entered the final as the second fastest swimmer, with a timing of 53.05 seconds. In the meantime, Camille Lacourt of France, who stayed
only 0.04 seconds behind Irie, occupied the third fastest qualification spot of the event, by submitting a time of 53.09 seconds.
David Plummer of USA surfaced as the fourth fastest qualifying swimmer of the back-stroke swim, as he completed his swim in a time of 53.30 seconds. Plummer was in a lead of only 0.04 seconds over his following swimmer, Helge Meeuw of Germany, who secured
the fifth best qualification spot in a time of 53.34 seconds. Meeuw was followed by USA’s Nicholas Thoman and Great Britain’s Liam Tancock, who qualified as the sixth and seventh fastest swimmers, with timings of 53.49 and 53.60 seconds, respectively. Gareth
Kean of New Zealand was the eight finest qualifying swimmer, as he stayed only 0.09 seconds behind Tancock and concluded his swim in 53.69 seconds.
The arena enjoyed the furious efforts of all participants who competed with each other to secure their spots in the last round, where the podium finishers will be awarded with awards and accolades for their efforts in the final meet.
