Jermain Defoe’s Season Starts Now
Forgotten Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe said after scoring his first goal since returning from injury that his season had just started. The striker was confident that he would improve as the season went forward and would thrive where other would tire.
He showed great potential at the start of the season, which was stalled because of injury, but he expects to continue from where he left off.
The 28 year old England international scored 28 goals for Tottenham last season, which was impressive since he was not the first choice striker. In September, while on duty for the England national team, Defoe picked up an ankle injury which put a hold on
his perfect start to the season. However, the striker vowed to return stronger than before and he seems to have done just that.
Defoe returned against London rivals Arsenal and played an important part in the comeback, which saw the game end 3-2 to Tottenham. Arsenal took an early lead an up until the second half were leading 2-0. However, Tottenham were inspired by the return of
Defoe, who scored his first goal since his return and scored 3 goals to win the match in shock turn of events.
Defoe revealed that his season had just started, he said while speaking to reporters,
“For me, this is just like starting the season all over again. I've done a mini pre-season and this is the start of my season. It's always important to feel fresh towards the end of the season and I think I'll do that because I've had two months off.”
Tottenham surprised everyone as they finished top of their group in the Champions League, successfully making it to the next stage of the European competition. Despite beating the toughest competition in the group, Inter Milan, Defoe was not very confident
of his side’s chances in the latter part of the competition.
He was aware of how unpredictable the European competition was. He said, “I think it sends a good message to the other clubs in the Champions League because we've scored a lot of goals. We're always going to do that with the players we've got so I suppose
that when other teams come up against us, they'll know it's going to be a difficult game.”
