  1. i just watched the first frazier - quarry contest yesterday, and i rate dempsey higher than smokin' joe.

dempsey had power in both hands compared to frazier primary weapon being his world famous left hook, so dempsey dominates quarry and stops him by the fifth!

  2. Good match up I like both these fighters but have to say that Jack Dempsey would be to much for a game Quarry and Jack would in all honesty ko Jerry around 12 round!

  3. This has got to be a joke, right? We're talking about a prime (1919) Dempsey v a "prime" Quarry (whatever that was). I won't go into the grisly details but Dempsey wins by TKO within 5 rounds.

Edit: Dempsey was past his prime when he met Tunney. You've got to take the Dempsey from the Willard fight. It ain't gonna be pretty..

  4. I gotta go with Ruddiger here (of course...who else wants to disagree with what everyone else says but me..lol).

I watched Dempsey versus Tunney....and Tunney was very small for a heavyweight...and not a very heavy puncher. But his constant jabbing stopped Dempsey from throwing anything at all.

I have to believe Quarry, although not as skilled as Tunney, but able to do MUCH more damage with what he had...would have stopped the smaller (and less skilled) Dempsey.

Keep in mind..Quarry came along at possibly the worst time to not be a GREAT heavyweight. He fought Norton, Frazier, Foreman, and Ali. You couldnt ask for a worse lineup.

  5. Jerry Quarry is the most under rated fighter of all time everyone knows I love Jerry Quarry and I say Quarry Knocks out Dempsey and I like Dem but Quarry was and excellent boxer

  6. Dempsey's style was extremely aggressive, he was smaller than quarry but his punches did a lot more damage, moreover quarry bled very easily and dempsey would have thrown countless flurries at him and probably won by stoppage however from a pure boxing perspective quarry had better over all skills and if it wasn t for his tendency to bleed he could win in this match.

  7. Muhammad Ali said of Quarry that he was the best heavyweight never to win a title. Tough, durable and an excellent boxer.

I'm going to be different and say Quarry stops Dempsey in the late rounds, and is ahead on the score cards at the time of stoppage.

Dempsey would have been to small and lack the power to keep Quarry off him. Dempsey would keep it interesting in the early rounds but Quarry's constant attack would wear down the smaller Dempsey.

Dempsey had been Ko'd in the first round by a lesser fighter in Jimmy Flin. He lost a couple other fights to lesser fighters as well. And was outboxed and outworked twice by Gene Tunney.

Size makes the difference here and Quarry uses it to pressure Dempsey and wear him down and knock him out.

Adam.. you are dreaming if you think Dempsey would Ko Quarry. Id Re Evaluate that statement if I were you. You too Untouchable.

It might be fair to say that Dempsey could win on cuts. But not a KO.

  8. dempsey wins by tko in round 7

  9. Jack Demspey by knockout before round 6

  10. quarry would come right at you.he tried to start the fight of with a bang, but that would be his biggest mistake because dempsey had more first round ko's then any other champ.dempsey would knock him out almost right away.so i say dempsey with first round ko 2 minutes in to the fight

  11. Both fighters are a bit overrated but it doesn't matter unless you're putting them against other fighters.   In this case 'size' DOES matter.    Dempsey knocked out a giant inept fighter in Jess Willard and he would be knocking out a smaller inept fighter in Quarry.

Quarry really wasn't that good.   He is just held in good company because he fought during the time of the toughest of the Hvt. division history.   Dempsey wasn't that great.  He has a good KO% because of the fact that he didnt have to worry about an 8 count.   Still he will good enough to beat a C-grade fighter like Quarry.

  12. I,m not sure why some think Dempsey was the smaller man ? Quarry was 6 ft. 195 lbs. Dempsey is listed as 6 1/2- 6'1- 187-205 lbs.

I like Dempsey in this bout.

Quarry gave Frazier some decent fights, but, he always went toe-to-toe and stayed in front of Smokin Joe. (Dangerous thing to do with the Manassa Mauler.)  Frazier was somewhat similar in style to Dempsey, with Jack having Frazier's speed or better. Also Dempsey had more overall power than Frazier in either and both hands, and with any punch.

I see the fight similar to Quarry & Frazier - But only in Quarry & Dempsey, it would end sooner.

  13. I believe that Jack Dempsey would have been too hard of a puncher for Jerry Quarry who was indeed a top contender and a very good fighter himself with enormous courage.  Quarry would try to slug with Jack much the way he did against Frazier and would pay the price.  Dempsey by technical knockout in 9 rounds.
