Jerry Sloan no longer a head coach candidate for the Charlotte Bobcats – NBA News
Former Utah Jazz coach Jerry Sloan has pulled himself out of the race for the coaching position at the Charlotte Bobcats.
Sloan was one of three coaches shortlisted by the Bobcats and met with team owner Michael Jordan for a second round of interviews before opting out of the of the prospective job.
While talking to Sam Amick of Sports Illustrated, Sloan said:
“I took myself out today. I don’t want to comment on it because it’s never profitable for anybody. It just makes it sound like you’re making a statement about someone. But they were wonderful and there were no problems. I just
took myself out.”
The Charlotte Bobcats finished this season with the worst record in NBA history, and did not offer a contract extension to their coach after the season ended. That led to a coach hunt for the Bobcats in which they interviewed 10
different coaches, including Patrick Ewing.
The Bobcats shortlisted the candidates to three, of which Sloan was one. The three candidates were to have an interview with Jordan before the final decision was to be made. Sloan went through the interview with Jordan but pulled
out after that.
The Bobcats will now pick from the two remaining coaches. They are Brian Shaw and Quin Snyder.
Shaw was the assistant coach to Phil Jackson with the Los Angeles Lakers during their prime and is currently the assistant coach of the Indiana Pacers under head coach Frank Vogel. His work with the Pacers has been appraised throughout
the NBA and is hailed as the favourite to land a head coaching job this season. Frank Vogel went as far as to say that he would be surprised if Shaw returned to Indiana as assistant coach next season.
Quin Snyder is the assistant coach of the Los Angeles Lakers under Mike Brown. Shaw is the front runner for the position but he also has offers from Portland Trail Blazers and there are reports that the Orlando Magic are also in
contact with him.
With a second round pick in the NBA Draft 2012, the Bobcats have some tough decisions to make in the coming weeks and will be looking to hire a new coach before the June 28th Draft.
