Jerry West: Golden State Warriors need some veteran players – NBA Update
The Golden State Warriors are an interesting franchise. They have looked dangerous for the last couple of seasons, with a few very talented young players on their roster, but haven’t been able to establish themselves as a force in the NBA.
NBA legend Jerry West, who is currently an executive member of the board at Golden State, believes that in order to change that the Warriors need two things. The first, in light of recent years and the brittle nature of some players on the team, is to stay
healthy. The second is to bring in some veterans who can be quality role players.
“Well, we need to be healthy - that's the most important thing. If we can be healthy, we're gonna be a better team. If we can stay healthy, we're gonna be a better team.” West told the San Francisco Chronicle.
He was obviously referring to Stephen Curry and Andrew Bogut’s injury records. Curry had on and off injuries throughout the shortened 2011 – 2012 NBA season while Bogut, who was brought in just before the trade deadline, has a history of freakish injuries.
The important factor though is going to be the addition of some veteran guys who can add some grit to the side and do some stuff that usually goes unnoticed but helps the team in big ways.
“But we need a couple of veteran players on our team ... And I'm not talking about guys that are 35, 36 years old. I'm talking about people that have some life left in them, that can really contribute, and give our coach some players that can do the intangible
things a heck of a lot better than some of the players we have.”
West is one of the most successful executives in the history of the NBA, having orchestrated multiple NBA World Championship winning teams at the Los Angeles Lakers.
Jerry therefore knows what he is talking about and backed up his preference for some veteran guys with the simple fact that Golden State have the youngest roster in the league.
“We have the youngest team in the league, I believe - we're gonna get a little bit younger in the draft this year.”
If the Warriors can add some people who have been around the league, and who know how to win, say someone like a Chauncey Billups, it could make a world of difference to the ball club.
