Jerry West backs Andrew Bogut to succeed at Golden State Warriors – NBA Update
The Golden State Warriors raised some eyebrows around the NBA when they traded in Andrew Bogut from the Milwaukee Bucks midway through the season. NBA legend, former player and general manger of the Los Angeles Lakers Jerry West though has stepped into the
debate and given his backing to Bogut.
Bogut came in from the Bucks despite being very suspect to injuries. In his career so far his talent has never been really allowed to shine because of the many injuries that have held him back. Therefore it was a gamble to start off with, and fans weren’t
too pleased about the fact that Golden State parted ways with Monta Ellis, one of the best scorers in the NBA at present, in order to get their hands on Bogut.
West, who is an executive member of the board at Golden State, has come up in support of Bogut. Jerry declared that the injury issues with Andrew were freakish of nature, and not very likely to be repeated.
He also praised the talent of the Australian centre, saying he has qualities that can help transform the fortunes of the team.
“He had two freak injuries, very freak injuries. And this guy's a heck of a player - he's not a good player, he's a HECK of a player. He's a tough kid, he takes up more space, he can block shots, he can rebound”
West did say that the Warriors still needed reinforcements in the frontline. David Lee is currently the starting power forward in the roster but Golden State will be keen to add another body to complement him and Bogut.
“And obviously we'd like to have another guy to go with him and David Lee, another big guy.”
Lastly, Jerry said the franchise realizes that they have weakened the backcourt with the departure of Ellis. Stephen Curry is quite a talent and if healthy would do a great job running things for the team. However, to be on the safe side, Golden State will
be looking to add another option.
“But I also think our backcourt needs addressing - Steph was hurt last year, we're hopeful that he's gonna be healthy, but we also have to have some insurance.”
