Jerry West gives an insight on his role at the Golden State Warriors – NBA Update
Jerry West is one of the most respected figures in the NBA. He has a career spanning decades as a player, coach and an executive. So when he took on an advisory role at the Golden State Warriors this off season, a lot of eyebrows
were raised.
The Warriors already have a good front office backed by enthusiastic owners. The franchise has not been the most successful over the years, but they do have a loyal following and are considered a great model for an NBA organization.
The addition of the great Jerry West can only make things better, but the old master believes he doesn’t have to do as hands on a job as he used to in the past.
"It would be absolutely irresponsible for me to go someplace, where someone has a job and they have been there for a while, to come in and try and say I want to make all these decisions." Said Jerry, according to Grantland.
West also spoke of his appreciation for the people who have done all the good work with the Warriors in the past and are continuing to do so in the present.
"The more I'm around them, sometimes I wonder," West responds. "I would very much give my opinion. On the other hand, they've made the playoffs once in 17 years and average about 19,000 fans a game."
Whatever the Golden State Warriors front office might have achieved, it can’t ever be remotely compared to what Jerry West has done over the years.
One of the greatest players to ever play the game, West is the ultimate icon of NBA. He is featured on the official logo of the league in his exquisite jumping pose. As an executive with the Los Angeles Lakers, Jerry is probably
the man most responsible for the enormous amount of success that franchise has enjoyed.
He first put together the show time Lakers, with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Magic Johnson leading the charge for multiple NBA World Championships. He was the one who spotted a young Kobe Bryant out of high school and put him together
with Shaquille O’Neal. As one last favour to the Lakers, West orchestrated the move for Pau Gasol, which was followed by two more NBA world Championships for the club.
With so much already on his resume, West plans to take things a little easy and enjoy his time at the Golden State Warriors.
"It's probably going to be fun for me," West admits. "I don't have to go in the office every day and worry if this guy's sick or if this guy's going to be playing. I can really objectively sit and watch."
