Jersey Shore Stakes 2011 at Monmouth Park - Flashpoint and Cal Nation favourites
Monmouth Park in this scorching heat offers some sprinting action in the form of a horse race more commonly known as the Jersey Shore Stakes.
The Grade 3 event is run over a left-handed dirt track. The sprinting is done over a distance of six furlongs. The Jersey Shore Stakes has drawn a field of seven and is to take place on July 3, 2011. The race has a purse of about $150,000.
Amongst the field of seven three-year olds the two favoured names are those of Flashpoint and Cal Nation.
Flashpoint, also known as the speedball races for Peachtree Stables. The three-year old roan, or, gray colt, is saddled by Wesley Ward. He has scored a win in the Grade 2 Hutcheson Stakes held on February 26, 2011 at Gulfstream Park.
A victory in the Hutcheson Stakes boosted the earnings of the Florida bred colt to $115, 200. He was bought for $100,000 from the 2009 Keeneland, September yearling sale purchase.
Flashpoint was then entered into the Florida Derby held on April 3, 2011. He stalked the pace under the masterful hands of jockey, Cornelio H. Velasquez, and, got hold of fourth position. The Grade 1 Florida Derby was Flashpoint’s two turn debut. He was
considered as one of the top contenders for the Kentucky Derby.
The son of Pomeroy has been assigned a weight limit of 123-pounds and his reins will be held by Velasquez. Flashpoint is out of the Two Punch mare Two Punch Lil.
Cal Nation receives conditioning from Todd Pletcher. The three-year old bay colt was first in an allowance race that took place on May 26, 2011. He broke his maiden along with John Velazquez in a seven furlong race on February 5, 2011.
He made his stakes debut on April 23, 2011 by participating in the Grade 2 Jerome Stakes. He got spanked into eighth position in that race. The Jerome Stakes was Cal Nation’s stakes debut for trainer, Todd Pletcher, in a one-turn mile event.
Also, he was favoured on the morning line at winning odds of 2-1. But he failed to live up to the expectations of Pletcher. Earlier in an allowance race held on March 19, 2011, he finished second.
The son of Distorted Humor aims for his first stakes win with Christopher DeCarlo and the weight assigned to the ridgling is 117 pounds.
The other contenders of the race include Zero Rate Policy, C J Russel.
This news may be ended with a t*t-bit that Jersey Shore Stakes was inaugurated in 1992 and though it began in Atlantic City, it later got moved to Monmouth Park in 1997. Horses enter in the race in hopes of boosting their earnings by ripping off huge prizes
if they are victorious.
