Jerson Mancio defends title by knocking out Charlie Cabilla in the fifth round – Boxing News
Jerson Mancio, the Philippines Games & Amusement Board (GAB) light flyweight champion, defended his title by knocking out fellow countryman Charlie Cabilla, in the fifth round of the 12-round showdown held on May 20, 2012.
The ring for the much anticipated Filipino pay-per-view was set up at Mandaue City Plaza Square situated in Barangay Centro, Mandaue City, Cebu, Philippines and the above duo headlined the night.
The whole extravaganza was organised and promoted by Michael Aldeguer of ALA Promotions and the fight card also witnessed Welbeth Loberanis take on Jason Canoy in a non-title bout while constituting the co-main event.
Jerson, 24, was entering in his career’s 21st bout and boasted 14 wins. He has lost just three bouts in his career and has nailed five of his opponents by knockout. Also known as the ‘Smooth Operator’, Mancio is dubbed as one of the most respectable
and ace Filipino light flyweight.
The young lad was coming from a two-bout lose streak and was in dire need of making a comeback as in one of the last two bouts he also lost the chance to grab the OPBF light flyweight gold.
His Sunday night opponent, Charlie, possessed a slightly upper hand as far as the experience is concerned but at the same time posed no substantial threat to Jerson. This was Mancio’s very first Philippines Games & Amusement Board (GAB) light flyweight title
defence bout and he had the odds clearly in his favour due to various reasons.
Charlie, also known as the ‘Steelbar’, has emerged victorious in just 12 of his total 25 bouts. In addition, he also possesses a pretty low knockout potential since he has grabbed just two wins by knocking the opponent out cold.
With decent knockout proficiency, an impressive win ratio, hometown and height advantage, there was no visible problem for Jerson to grab an easy win over Cabilla. The pace of the bout was set by Jerson who started things off with a barrage of hooks that
rattled Charlie during the first half of the first round.
The force of the punches was so severe that Cabilla lost his ground and fell but did not lose his senses. The second half of the first round was dominated by Charlie who seemed determined to take revenge of the initial fall.
Both men took a huge number of jabs on their faces but were not ready to forfeit the bout at all costs. During the fifth decisive round, Jerson connected a raw powered huge right jab to Charlie’s mid-section.
The damage was substantial as Charlie went down and got flattened on the ring floor. The bout-referee completed his 10-count and eventually announced Jerson as the winner and still the owner of Philippines GAB light flyweight title.
With this win Mancio has improved to 15 wins with six via KO and Charlie has further tarnished his resume by receiving career’s 10th loss.
