Jerzy Janowicz blows away Dominic Thiem in the opening round clash – Salzburg Indoors 2011 CH
Unseeded in the tournament, the Pole competitor, Jerzy Janowicz, registered a comprehensive victory over the 18-year-old Austrian wildcard, Dominic Thiem, in the opening round of Salzburg Indoors on Tuesday.
The hard-court encounter took merely 51 minutes to conclude, with Janowicz winning in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3, to advance in to the round of 16 of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Challenger Tour tournament. The Pole
competitor dropped just four of the total 16 games being played in the matchup, outplaying the local teenager in every segment of the game in style.
The young Austrian proved too bleak for the belligerence of Janowicz, who adopted an aggressive strategy right from the beginning. Thiem’s lack of experience was clearly visible throughout the matchup, as the teenager proved a
bit over-ambitious, spraying a number of errant strokes all over the court in the process.
Thiem utterly failed to craft a single break point in the entire contest, while the Pole converted four of his six break opportunities to take the better of his opponent in the matchup. Janowicz fired seven cracking aces and lost
just five points on his first serve, clinching 22 out of 27, to conclude his convincing victory in no time.
The Austrian appeared sloppy right from the beginning and gave plenty of opportunities to his opponent to take early advantage in the match. Janowicz nailed the first serve break of the day in the fourth game and before Thiem could
recover from the damage, the Pole cracked in his second successive break point conversion to pocket the opening set at 6-1 to get a flying start.
A steadier start was seen in the following set, with Thiem holding his serve in his opening three games. Janowicz upped his gears once again in the seventh game, breaking into a 4-3 lead and keep pressing the teenager opponent
to slip in another break point in the ninth game to finish off the match at 6-3. A total of 85 points were played in the contest, with Janowicz seizing 53 and Thiem lagging far behind at 32 to finish on the losing side in the end.
Janowicz will face the fifth seeded Frenchman, Benoit Paire, in the next round to battle it out for a place in the quarter-finals of the Salzburg Indoors. Paire had a rough ride against the German qualifier, Jan-Lennard Struff,
in the opening round clash, finally overcoming him in three sets, 7-6(3), 4-6, 7-6(4), to reach the round of 16 in the tournament.
