Jerzy Janowicz rallies past Peter Steinberger to advance in qualifiers – Bet-At-Home Cup 2011
Pole Jerzy Janowicz battled past German Peter Steinberger in a three set thriller at the Bet-At-Home Cup 2011, an ATP World Tour event held on the clay courts in Kitzbuhel, Austria. He registered a 7-6(4), 4-6, x.x victory over
the 26-year-old German to advance into the second round of the qualifiers on Saturday.
Ranked 142nd in the South African Airways ATP World Tour rankings, Janowicz took two hours and forty minutes to tumble over the German, ranked 952 places below him, on their first meeting.
Both men displayed extra-ordinary tennis in the opening set and jolt down almost similar stats. They saved one out of three breakpoints conceded and converted two out of three breakpoint opportunities to their advantage. Janowicz
and Steinberger even committed similar amount of three double faults and took the set to a tie-breaker. The Poll, however, prevailed in it and edged past Steinberger with a 7-6(4) score line.
Steinberger re-focused in the second set and after exchanging two breaks, he converted another breakpoint opportunity to his advantage in the end to seal the equaliser with a 6-4 score line. The German clobbered a slightly higher
first serve share of 59 percent as compared to Jaowicz’s 55 percent and registered a plausible 55 percent win on it. Furthermore, he fended off four out of six breakpoints faced and converted three out of four breakpoint chances to his advantage to help win
comfortably.
The frustrated 20-year-old Janowicz went berserk in the opening set and reeled off first three games in a row before gifting away his serve in the fourth game. He then broke the German’s serve for the third time at the seventh
game to eventually clinch the decider with an assuring 6-2 score line. The Poll clobbered a much better first serve share of 58 percent as compared to German’s 44 percent and earned a spectacular 91 percent win on it. He saved only one out of two breakpoints
faced but further spiced the set by converting three out of five breakpoint opportunities to his advantage.
If Janowicz focus on his defensive side, he can easily secure a main draw spot and cruise far in this event.
