Jerzy Janowicz slays Andres Molteni to cruise into second round – Poznan Porsche Open 2011 CH
Local star Jerzy Janowicz swat past Argentinean Andres Molteni with a breadstick at the Poznan Porsche Open, an ATP Challenger Tour event held on the clay courts in Poznan, Poland. With the crowd on his side, Janowicz registered
a 6-1, 6-4 victory over the 23-year-old Argentinean to advance into the second round on Tuesday.
20-year-old Poll displayed extra-ordinary skills on home soil to dump Molteni in straight sets in one hour and twenty-four minutes. Meeting each other for the first time, world number 164, Janowicz outclassed the Argentinean, ranked
33 places below him, completely to secure a second round spot.
The local hero thundered into the opening set and bombarded powerful groundstrokes to reel off first five games in a row before Molteni could hold on. He then held his serve in the last game to earn the breadstick. Janowicz clobbered
a higher first serve share of 55 percent as compared to Molteni’s 48 percent and registered a superb 82 percent win on it.
He continued his momentum into the second set and held his opening serve in the second game to take the lead. The Poll got the desiderated break in the third game and later held on to remaining serves by rolling the balls expertly
onto the lines to seal the set with a 6-4 win. He produced a higher first serve share of 63 percent as opposed to Argentinean’s 58 percent and registered an amazing 86 percent win on it.
Overall, the Poll saved all four breakpoints faced through his brilliant defensive skills and capitalised on three out of nine breakpoint opportunities to his advantage to win comfortably.
He will next face eight seeded Czech Jaroslav Pospisil who bounced back to win against French qualifier Nicolas Renavand in a three set thriller.
The qualifier saved only one out of three breakpoints faced but converted three out of five breakpoint opportunities to his advantage to win the set with a 6-3 score line.
Pospisil raised the bar of his game in the second set and held entire serves through quick forehands and backhands and by fending off all three breakpoints faced. He then capitalised on the only breakpoint chance he founded to
his advantage to clinch the equaliser with a 6-3 score line.
30-year-old Czech maintained consistency in his game in the final set and broke Renavand’s serve three times to take lead. However, he lost his serve three times and took the set to a tie-breaker. Pospisil prevailed in it to seal
the decider with a 7-6(3) win.
