Jerzy Janowicz topples Janko Tipsarevic in the quarter-finals – BNP Paribas Masters 2012
World number 69, Jerzy Janowicz of Poland, continued his dream run in Paris, as he defeated the eighth seed, Serbia’s Janko Tipsarevic, to reach the last-four stage at the BNP Paribas Masters.
The Polish player lost the first set 3-6 but bounced back to win the second one 6-1 and then when he was leading 4-1 in the decider, Tipsarevic retired from the match due to illness.
Janowicz and Tipsarevic did not drop any of their serves in the first half of the opening set and squared off the proceedings at 3-3. The Serbian number two bagged three back to back afterwards to claim it 6-3.
Tipsarevic won the opener but he was suffering with illness and it took the toll on him in the second set, as he lost opening five games to go down 0-5. The Serbian player avoided complete humiliation by holding his serve in the
sixth and reducing the trail to 1-5 but he could not do anything more, losing it 1-6.
Janowicz and Tipsarevic held their opening serves to level the score at 1-1 in the decider. The Polish contender grabbed following three games to attain a 4-1 lead. Tipsarevic found impossible to play even one more point at that
moment, so he forfeited the match.
The 21-year-old, Janowicz, needed one hour and 48 minutes to clinch victory in a tough match.
Commenting on his unbelievable run, the Polish player said, "In the second and third set I just played the best tennis of my life. I didn't know actually I can play that good. It's really not easy for me to realise what is going
on in my life right now. Right now I'm playing the best tennis of my life, and I hope tomorrow I can play even better. I don't know what I should expect from myself, but I hope I will not finish tomorrow this tournament yet."
He added, “The semi-final is something unbelievable for me and for my family. My family was crying after yesterday's match and after today's match.”
Janowicz is pitted against the French number three, Gilles Simon, in the semi-finals.
