Jesse Huta Galung battles past Piotr Gadomski into second round – BNP Paribas Polish Open 2011 CH
Eighth seed Jesse Huta Galung of the Netherlands fought back after the drubbing in the first set to beat Polish Piotr Gadomski, ranked 805th in the world, in three sets 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the opening round at the BNP Paribas Polish Open in Sopot, Poland on Wednesday. The Dutch took one hour and 43 minutes to oust his opponent.
Gadomski was almost flawless in the first set as he lost only a single game, breaking the Dutch twice to win the set 6-1. The Polish hit 59 percent of the first serves and two aces in the opening set. The 20-year-old grabbed 79 percent of the first service points and 46 percent of the second service points. The Polish returned superbly, winning five of the eleven first return points in the first set. Gadomski saved the only break point he faced and capitalised on both break point opportunities he created on Huta Galung’s serve in the opening set.
After losing the set miserably, Huta Galung made a good start in the second set as he broke the Polish in the opening game and held his serve in the next game to take a 2-0 lead. Gadomski broke back in the sixth game to equalise the score at 3-3. The Dutch broke again in the ninth game and served out the set at 5-4. The six feet and two inches tall kept his first serve percentage at 76 percent, converting 68 percent of the first serves into points in the second set. The Dutch claimed 33 percent of the first return points in comparison to 32 percent by his opponent. Huta Galung won two of the three break points he received and saved one of the two break points he faced on his own serve in the second set.
Gadomski came roaring into the deciding set, breaking the Dutch in the second game and holding his serve in the next game to race to a 3-0 lead. However, the Polish could not retain his form, losing six of the next seven games to go down 4-6. Huta Galung delivered 58 percent of the first serves and one ace in the final set. The Dutch made difference with the return of service, claiming nine of the 21 first return points. The 25-year-old failed to save the only break point he faced on his own serve but converted both break points he received on Gadomski’s serve in the third set.
Huta Galung will play world number 140 Andreas Beck of Germany in the round of 16. The German ousted wild card entrant Andriej Kapas of Poland in straight sets 6-2, 6-3 in the first round.
