Jesse Huta Galung exiles David Guez in the second qualifying round – Australian Open 2012
Dutch inferior ranked, Jesse Huta Galung, capsized the superior ranked French competitor, David Guez, in the second qualifying round of the Australian Open. On Saturday both players contested for the final qualifying round berth
and stunningly the Dutch destroyed his opponent in straight sets 6-4, 6-0. Guez looked a bit rusty and tired during the match and it proved out to be a tamed effort from the 29-years-old French.
World number 233, Galung, was facing his opponent at the courts for the fifth time in his career; head-to-head scores were tied at 2-2. It was expected that both players would provide a cracking three-setter for the crowd but it
went other way round. It was a total one man show with Galung clinching all the glory, sparing nothing for his 188th ranked French contestant.
First set was pretty sloppy, as both players were not willing to take that extra risk that would have created an impact in the match. The Melbourne crowd was a bit disappointed to witness the first eight games ending without much
drama. No breaks were witnessed in this period and scores were pushed to 4-4. Guez looked a bit tired and lost the crucial game on his serve that was good enough for his opponent to capitalize to finish off the first set proceedings.
It was never a complete package for the viewers, as both players were just playing without any flare and waiting for their opponents to make mistake; no one was looking to ignite the dazzling display and dismantle the rival; improvisation
was totally missing from both ends and the tamed performance brought little entertainment to the attendants at the arena.
Second set was complete opposite of what everyone witnessed in the first half. It was a display of complete domination from the Dutch that was shocking considering the fact that he was ranked way lower than his opponent. Guez had
no answers to this onslaught and contested the second set in a half hearted manner.
He seemed to have lost the love for the game and looked low on confidence. With a bagel to his name, Galung marched into the next round with ease. He goes head-to-head against the Briton participant, James Ward.
