Jesse Huta Galung vaporises David Guez to reach the main draw – Australian Open 2012
Netherlands’ Jesse Huta Galung flashed past French David Guez with a bagel to qualify for the main draw at the Australian Open 2012 on Saturday. He clobbered a 6-4, 6-0 victory over the French at this first Grand Slam event of the year taking place on the hard courts in Melbourne, Australia.
World number 233, Galung, stayed on the right path after destroying the French, ranked 45 levels above him in the South African Airways ATP World Tour rankings, in straight sets. After earning success at this one hour and six minutes long marathon, the Dutch confidently advanced into the main draw of this $26 million Major tennis tournament.
Galung entered the opening set at Melbourne Park with conviction and held entire serves after warding off the only breakpoint he came across. He cashed in the only break opportunity in the ninth game and subsequently bagged the opener with a 6-4 score line in 38 minutes. The Dutch clobbered a lower first serve share of 50 percent as opposed to Guez’s 58 percent but clinched an impressive 17 out of 18 points on it.
The lower ranked Dutch went berserk in the following set as he blasted flurry of groundstrokes and stroke out all six games in a row. He again brushed off the only breakpoint he encountered and capitalised on three out of four break chances to earn the bagel in less than half an hour. Galung again penned down a lower first serve share but clicked spectacular 9 out of 10 points on it.
Overall, the 26-year-old Dutch spilled four unforced errors and four double faults but fired seven aces to cover it. He then finished the match by earning 63 points and the four breaks of serve Galung earned, led him bag the match easily.
Galung, who reached his career best rank at number 110 last year in June, displayed brilliant skills in the qualifying competition as he upset the 26th seed, Simon Gruel, in the first round. In the second qualifying round, he slew Brazilian Caio Zampieri with double bagels and set-up this clash. Not only this, the Dutch opened 2012 season with a shocking victory over the fifth seed, Martin Klizan, in the qualifiers at the Qatar ExxonMobil Open.
Thai competitor, Danai Udomchoke, will accompany Galung in the main draw. He trashed Canadian Peter Polansky in straight sets on another court to advance. The Thai broke Polansky’s serve three times to clinch the match with a 6-4, 6-2 victory.
