Jesse Levine flabbergasts Michael Yani in 2nd round – Charlottesville Challenger 2011
The biggest upset of the day was when American qualifier Jesse Levine flabbergasted seventh seeded compatriot Michael Yani in the second round of the Charlottesville Challenger 2011.
The two old fangled rivals had taken up the gauntlet on indoor hard courts of the Boar’s Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, Virginia. It took Levine just fifty minutes to wipe out seventh seeded Yani in straight sets of 6-1,
6-2 on Wednesday the 2nd of November 2011.
The opening set was clearly a one sided victory for Levine as he hit 69 percent of his first serves on target and bagged a grandiose 93 percent of his first service points won. Moreover, his defence was as strong as an ox and he
did not set up a single breakpoint opportunity in the entire set.
He not only possessed strong offensive skills but had a strong backhand that assisted him in attaining a 53 percent of his total return points in the sets. In addition, he also capitalized on 67 percent of breakpoints won.
The first round of the match was initiated by Levine and he held his serve to commence the scoreboard at 1-0. Right behind his heels was Yani and he too held his serve to place himself on the scoreboard at 1-1. However, for Yani,
that was the only service game that he could bag as his opponent was a stronger player than him.
Nevertheless, Levine utilized the serve-break technique to reel off straight two games against his adversary and the scoreboard had shifted to a 4-1 by the end of the fifth game. The American qualifier repeated the feat and in
doing so; he bagged the opening set with a breadstick victory.
The second set of the match was initiated by Yani and this time he double faulted on his serve. Mean while, Levine scooped two games and placed himself on the scoreboard with a mini lead of 2-0. In the following two games the players
once more held serve and the score had progressed to 3-1 at the end of the fourth game.
It was in the fifth game that Yani came under pressure and his forehand shot went wayward and endorsed a crucial break to his opponent. Levine once more reeled off straight two games and by the end of the sixth game the score had
progressed to 5-1.
However, in the following game Levine was unable to close the set, while Yani had reduced the deficit to 2-5. During the last game, As Levine smashed a backhand winner down the line; he secured his victory of the set and the match.
Levine will now be facing second seeded compatriot Michael Russell in the quarterfinal of the event.
