Jesse Mendes and Sebastien Zietz claim victory in quarter-finals at Vans World Cup of Surfing
Brazil’s Jesse Mendes and Hawaii’s Sebastien Zietz secured their place in the semi-finals at the Vans World Cup of Surfing, the second of three events on 30th anniversary Vans Triple Crown of Surfing, after claiming top honours in their respective
quarter-finals that went down at Sunset Beach in Oahu, Hawaii, on Tuesday, December 4, 2012.
Australia’s Lincoln Taylor made it through into the semi-finals after finishing behind Mendes in second place during the first quarter-final. Australia’s Kieren Perrow finished in third place, while France’s Jeremy Flores had to settle for fourth place.
Both the surfers consequently got eliminated from the competition.
The second quarter-final saw Australia’s Adrien Buchan finish behind Zietz in second place to secure his place in the next stage of the competition as well. Hawaii’s Jamie O’Brien and French Polynesia’s Michel Bourez got removed from the contention for the
event title after rounding out the bottom-two position.
The latest day of the competition saw six-to-eight foot surf prevailing at the main event site, thus presenting the talented surfers from around the globe an ideal stage to put their exquisite skills on display.
The first quarter-final pitted Mendes against Taylor, Perrow and Flores in a four-man battle for survival.
The Brazilian surfer got off to a promising start, earning a 7.77 off his first business-wave and went on to back it up with a 5.67-point ride, thus registering a heat-total of 13.44 points.
Taylor finished in second place with a heat-total of 12.86 points, which comprised of a near-perfect 9.43 and 3.43-point wave.
Perrow finished in third place with a heat-total of 11.70 points, while Flores had to settle for a two-wave total of 5.57 points.

The Hawaiian surfer asserted his dominance over his rivals through a 9.30-point ride and went on to add an additional 6.50 points to his account, thus finishing with a heat-total of 15.80 points.
Buchan made the semi-final cut as well after registering a heat-total of 14.26 points, which comprised of a 7.33 and 6.93-point ride.
O’Brien finished in third place with a heat-total of 13.86 points, which comprised of a very impressive 9.43 and dismal 4.43-point ride, while Bourez had to settle for fourth place after registering a heat-total of 12.87 points.
