Troubled New Zealand batsman, Jesse Ryder, has opted to take a break from cricket, for an indefinite period of time in order to deal with what his manager terms, a “deeply stressful and emotional time.”
Aaron Klee, Ryder’s manager, issued an official statement this Thursday, explaining that the all-rounder, who had been training with the Wellington squad, had decided to take a break and pulled out of the Plunket Shield fixtures, the first of which Wellington
are due to play against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Northern-Districts-c825.
The decision was reached after consultation with Klee, Heath http://www.senore.com/Cricket/New-Zealand-c754 Cricket Players Association), and Karen Nimmo (Ryder’s clinical psychologist).
“We hope that Jesse will be available for http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Wellington-c864 selection again in the coming weeks, but it would be imprudent of me to try and put an exact date on this,” Klee stated.
The 27-year-old’s stress problems began when he came under fire from http://www.senore.com/Cricket/South-Africa-c757. Ryder consumed 42 balls in order to score a half-century,
and even used up 7 delivers in order to get a single. The match at Eden Park marked his return to the national squad after a period of 2 months during which he had been recovering from a calf injury, and Klee claimed that the harsh words from McMillan had
been a great set-back.
“That criticism would hurt anyone. He wasn't just questioning Jesse's batting, he was questioning his integrity,” he said.
Ryder’s return to the national squad took another downturn when he split the webbing on his hand while playing the second ODI against South Africa, and followed that up with a night of drinking at a hotel in Napier with teammate http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Doug-Bracewell-c1394, where both
players also got involved in a verbal tussle with a bar patron.
Team management took strict action, pointing out that players recovering from injuries are supposed to abstain from alcohol. Coach http://www.senore.com/Cricket/BB-McCullum-c1129 were swift in expressing their disapproval, and Ryder was banned for the remainder
of the ODI series. He was also dropped from the Test series against South Africa later, but this was owing to fitness concerns, and not disciplinary issues.
“There were some pretty stressful times for him,” Klee said regarding the reasons behind the left-hander’s decision to take a break from cricket. “We are not dealing with this from a professional perspective as a cricketer; this is all about Jesse as a person.
That is my total focus as his manager and as his friend.”
