Jesse Witten dismantles Rohan Bopanna in straight sets in qualies – Legg Mason Tennis Classic 2011
Rohan Bopanna of India was washed away in round 1 of the Legg Mason Tennis Classic qualifiers. Playing for the very first time against Jesse Witten, the local, Bopanna did not stand much of a chance as the world No.293, Witten,
proved to be much sturdy player. Playing at the William H.G. Fitzgerald Tennis Centre, the Indian had a huge support regardless the country.
Ranked doubles world no.10, Bopanna did put up a tough time in the first set but after that he collapsed instantly. Ranked 554th in singles, the Indian did put a strong defence as he did not give any breakpoints in the
first set. However, the match was pretty much one sided as Witten trampled his competitor in less than an hour.
The match started off as Bopanna took over the first game of the match. The American world No.293 followed his adversary winning the next game and levelling the score to 1-1. Bopanna aced five times in the set with an 83 percent
1st serve points winning. Saving 100 percent of the breakpoints the Indian pushed the opening set into a tiebreaker.
Witten explained the disparity in rankings winning the tiebreaker and the set 7-6(2). The American totalled 39 points including 28 service and 11 return points.
The worst was yet to come for the Indian as Witten took off with the second set serving first and winning. Bopanna, dismantled by the American, could not win a single game. The 31-year-old totalled just 14 points in the second
set.
On the contrary, the American world No.293 secured 28 points in thirteen service and fifteen return. Breaking the Indian an amazing three times in a single set, Witten won 6-0 in the second set, winning the match 7-6(2) and 6-0.
The severe beating to the Indian world No.554 led the American to succeed into the 2nd round of the Legg Mason Tennis Classic qualifier.
