Jessica Aguilar wins against Lisa Ellis-Ward in women’s bout at Bellator 58 – MMA Recap
The women’s bout in the 115 lbs (pounds) category was held at the Bellator 58 event hosted by Bellator Fighting Championships on November 19, 2011. The fight featured American mixed martial arts (MMA) fighters Jessica Aguilar and
Lisa Ellis-Ward. Aguilar won the three round fight through a unanimous decision, 30-27, 30-27, 30-27.
As the first round progressed, Ellis-Ward took a slight lead with her combo punches. In reply, Aguilar gave her own combination of punches. This was a statement that she will not go down that easily. Neither of the two fighters
were moving back with their offensive style. Their attacks were persistent as they were giving their best shots. Ellis-Ward used her agility as she threw some sidekicks to put Aguilar off balance.
The 29-year old Aguilar, who has won twelve fights in her MMA career, lost four fights with no draws, was gaining some momentum in the fight. She did some damage with another combo punches and then used her knee as a weapon. In
the closing seconds of the first round, Ellis-Ward was looking for an opportunity to gain control over the fight but Aguilar did not let that happen. Aguilar’s defensive strategy goes off balance as Ellis-Ward used her knee with force on her opponent’s head,
where the nose was her clear target.
With the second round bell echoing in the arena, the spectators saw blood dripping from Aguilar’s nose. The knee shot by Ellis-Ward in the ending minutes of the first round was effective as it apparently broke Aguilar’s nose. This
was a big opening for Aguilar as she now had the upper hand. Ellis-Ward wanted to use the opportunity of a broken nose to put Aguilar down but her shots were not connecting properly.
Ellis-Ward became a bit desperate as she attacked with her knee as she jumped to gain some elevation and momentum. Her jumping knee strike went out of target which was an opening Aguilar cashed instantly. Aguilar, who was in his
second Bellator fight of her MMA career, wanted to end the match as she went for the anaconda choke on Ellis-Ward. Aguilar succeeds only momentarily as Ellis-Ward fought back. The second round ended when Aguilar looked to have her opponent in her grip.
The third and final round was when Aguilar had the chance to throw some good punches on her opponent. This reduced the momentum which Ellis-Ward was trying to maintain. Aguilar was again using her combo punches with perfection
and is able to get her opponent down on the map. The third round ends with the judges unanimously declaring Aguilar as the winner of the bout.
