Jessica Bruin Cavalheiro pockets Women’s 200m freestyle title: Day two – 2011 Jose Finkel Trophy
Jessica Bruin Cavalheiro of FIAT/MINAS pocketed the title of Women’s 200m freestyle swim on the following day of the 2011 Jose Finkel Trophy on August 31, in Belo Horizonte, Brazil.
Bruin Cavalheiro demonstrated her extraordinary efforts in the 200m discipline and impressed the arena by winning the gold medal of the event in a time of 2 minutes and 02.62 seconds. She was nearly ten seconds slower than the world record of 1 minute and
52.98 seconds, set by Federica Pellegrini of Italy at the 2009 World Championships in Rome. She was also 3.42 seconds slower than champion record holder of Nadejda Tchemezova of CRVG/RJ, who clocked a time of 1 minute and 59.98 seconds in 1999.
Cavalheiro was chased by Kimberly Vandenberg of FIAT/MINAS/MG, who remained just 0.08 seconds away from her on the concluding wall and clocked a time of 2 minutes and 02.70 seconds for silver medal. Third spot on the podium was secured by Cavalheiro’s team-member,
Manuella Lyrio, who was only 0.20 seconds away from the silver medallist and ended her swim in a time of 2 minutes and 02.90 seconds for bronze medal.
Cavalheiro faced an immense battle from Vandenberg throughout the swim. The 20-year old Cavalheiro finished her first round of the swim behind Vandenberg, who clocked a time of 59.72 seconds to overwhelm Cavalheiro’s 1 minute and 00.38 seconds effort. They
both continued the same, whereas, in the final lap of the swim, Cavalheiro proved her dominance for the title by out-touching Vandenberg on the finishing wall.
Nevertheless, the bronze medallist was trailed by Larissa Martins Oliveira of ECP/SABESP, who remained 0.82 seconds slower than her and clocked a time of 2 minutes and 03.72 seconds for fourth position. Oliveira was chased by Mireia Belmonte Garcia of CRF/RJ,
who concluded her swim in a time of 2 minutes and 04.35 seconds for fifth position.
In the meantime, Poliana Okimoto of CORINTHIANS/S.BERNAR remained evident for the sixth best spot, as she completed her swim in a time of 2 minutes and 05.59 seconds. Okimoto was in a lead of nearly one second over her subsequent competitor, ANA Carolina
Araujo Santos of ECP/SABESP, who produced a seventh fastest time of 2 minutes and 06.31 seconds for seventh spot. Santos was just 0.30 second ahead of her following swimmer, Virginia Bardach Martin of UNISANTA, who ended up eighth by posting a time of 2 minutes
and 06.61 seconds.
The arena went wild with the thrilling performances of all swimmers, while the podium finishers collected their accolades after the session.
