Jessica Davenport, Sue Bird, Renee Montgomery: Top WNBA players from August 5 games
Two games took place in Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) on Friday, August 5, 2011. At BOK Center, Indiana Fever cruised past Tulsa Shock 85-65, handing them their franchise record-tying 13th consecutive defeat. It
was Indiana’s fifth straight victory in a row. They got off to a good start and never relinquished their lead till the final buzzer.
In the second game of the evening, Seattle Storm topped Connecticut Sun, 81-79, snapping their three-game winning streak. Both teams played a very close game until the last second of the fourth quarter when Connecticut failed to
contain Sue Bird from 22 foot down. Let us look at some of the best performances that dominated the two games:
Indiana Fever vs. Tulsa Shock
Jessica Davenport
Jessica Davenport had a superb performance in Indiana’s victory. The 26-year-old came off the bench with a game-high 17 points on a 7 for 11 shooting from the field. The centre player also grabbed four rebounds, stole the ball
once and blocked one shot. Davenport scored 15 of her points in the second half.
Tamika Catchings
Fever’s small forward Tamika Catchings scored 15 points, including nine in the first half. The nine-time WNBA All-Star also pulled down four boards, blocked two shots and stole the ball twice. Catchings went 5 for 9 from the floor,
pinning 2 of 4 three-pointers.
Tiffany Jackson
Tulsa’s forward Tiffany Jackson racked up 12 points, grabbed eight boards, dished out three assists and had two steals in the loss. The 26-year-old player shot 4 for 10 from the field and also 4 of 4 free throws.
Jennifer Lacy
Jennifer Lacy was the second player for Tulsa who reached the double figures. Lacy also added 12 points, hitting 6 for 10 from the field. The player also pulled down eight rebounds in more than 25 minutes on court.
Seattle Storm vs. Connecticut Sun
Sue Bird
Sue Bird knocked down a game winning 3-pointer in the closing second to seal the third consecutive victory of Storm. The win also pushed them to the second place in the top heavy Western Conference. Bird, a two-time WNBA Champion,
finished the game with 20 points and five rebounds. The 30-year-old guard shot 7 for 15 from the field, including 4 for 7 beyond the arc.
Tanisha Wright
Seattle’s guard Tanisha Wright also played well and contributed 18 points, five assists and four rebounds in the victory. She hit 6 for 10 from the floor and 5 for 6 from free throw line.
Renee Montgomery
Renee Montgomery led Connecticut with 19 points, shooting 7 for 13 from the field, including 3 for 3 from the three-point range. Montgomery also added six boards, three assists and two steals in the losing effort.
Tina Charles
Tina Charles also recorded a double-double in the loss. The 22-year-old centre grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds, canned 18 points, stole the ball twice and blocked two shots.
