Jessica Ennis hopeful of London winning bid for 2017 World Athletics Championships
Jessica Ennis, the 25-year-old track and field athlete from United Kingdom, has expressed her hopes for England to bag the bid for the 2017 World Athletics Championships. After it was revealed that the athlete has been chosen as an ambassador for the bid and her giant pictures were being projected at the Tower Bridge, the girl admitted that she was excited over the fact that London was a potential host for the global athletics event.
The efforts of the reigning European champion and former world heptathlon champion are aimed at levelling grounds before the visit of the IAAF Evaluation Commission, which is to arrive in London to assess the city’s potential for hosting the big event. Ennis is of the view that her support for her capital city will definitely play a role in aliening the commission’s mind in favour of London over Doha, Qatar.
Providing reasons which could be regarded crucial for UK hosting the prestigious global athletics event, Ennis said, “Great Britain has such a strong history of supporting athletics and our fans are the most passionate and knowledgeable in the world. My fondest memories have come at the World Championships and I would love for athletes from all over the globe to have the same opportunity in London’s fantastic Olympic Stadium in 2017.”
Adding up to her thoughts, the heptathlon specialist said, “I’m proud to be supporting the London bid as an official ambassador. It’s amazing how many athletes have got behind the London 2017 bid already; it’s where we want to compete.”
First step for the commission, which is all set to evaluate London’s prospects for the mega athletics event, and that will be chaired by Bob Hersh, the Senior Vice President of IAAF, will be to have a thorough meeting with Lord Sebastian Coe along with Hugh Robertson, Baroness Margaret Ford and Boris Johnson, where they will give a legal guarantee to the IAAF delegation that they would be able to hold the Championships event in the Olympic Stadium.
